1775: The Revolutionary War begins to be conceptualized.
1776 (January): Common Sense is published. 1776 (July): Declaration of Independence is written and approved by the Continental Congress. 1781: Revolutionary War ends with the colonists' victory; The Continental Congress agrees on the Articles of Confederation. March 1, 1781: Continental Congress is replaced by the Congress of the Confederation, which forms the basis of the new US government. 1783: Britain recognizes the independence of the U.S. with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. 1787: US Constitution is written at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA. 1788 (March - June): The Federalist Papers are published. 1788: US Constitution is ratified by 9 states and the supreme law of the U.S. Many other states follow in ratification. 1789: George Washington is elected first President of the U.S. |
